Sedation Dentistry

Drs. Ty and Susan Caldwell offer oral sedation dentistry at their Orange County practice in Cypress for patients who suffer from anxiety about dental treatment. This anxiety causes many people to avoid basic dental care until small problems become big problems. The result can be a procedure more complicated and more expensive than if the problem had been addressed sooner.

We can dispense oral sedative medication which can be taken one half to one full hour before a procedure or sometimes the night before, depending on the patient's level of anxiety. While oral sedation dentistry will make the patient feel relaxed and comfortable, it will not reduce the pain associated with some procedures. Therefore, local anesthesia may also be administered.

With the help of a little pill, anxiety disappears and even a long procedure seems to go by quickly. Some patients even doze off during procedures. In fact, with sedation dentistry many of our patients can comfortably undergo longer sessions and reduce their number of visits.

If anxiety over dental treatment is keeping you from getting the care you need, you may be a candidate for sedation dentistry. Contact our Orange County general and cosmetic dentist team to learn more about alleviating your dental anxiety and getting the dental care you need.

Intraoral Camera

Early detection of problems is one of the best ways to ensure that dental care is as easy and affordable as possible. Our practice uses the intraoral camera to help us spot small problems before they become big problems . If such conditions as tooth decay and gum disease can be treated early, then the more complex dental treatments associated with tooth loss, such as dental implants, can usually be avoided. The intraoral camera takes extremely detailed close-up pictures that show us more than we can see with the unaided eye.

Computer Imaging

To help them counsel patients in choosing the best course of treatment for their needs, Drs. Ty and Susan Caldwell use computer imaging. With computer imaging, they can edit pictures of the patient's smile to show the effect of various treatments, such as porcelain veneers and Invisalign® orthodontics. Decision making becomes much easier when the patient can see the results in advance.

Digital X-rays

By applying digital technology to X-rays, exposure times are greatly reduced—an important health benefit for the patient. Additionally, digital X-ray images are much more accurate than traditional X-rays, which gives the doctor more information with which to plan the right treatment.

Panoramic X-rays

Many dentists must send patients to a special X-ray lab when regular single-frame X-rays don’t detect problems. Drs. Ty and Susan Caldwell have their own panoramic X-ray equipment, which takes a single wide image of the entire mouth right in their office.

Ultrasonic Cleanings

One of the biggest barriers to the undeniable benefit of regular cleanings is the discomfort of old-fashioned metal tools. Our practice offers ultrasonic cleaning, which uses high-frequency sound waves to break up plaque and tartar and a stream of water to rinse it away. However, for those patients who experience dental anxiety even when undergoing a minimally invasive procedure such as an ultrasonic cleaning, we provide sedation dentistry to provide a more comfortable dental experience.

Computers in Every Room

Having a computer in each treatment room allows the doctors to access patient records without leaving the patient's side. Chairside computers also show the images obtained from the intraoral camera for both the doctor and patient to see.

The Smile Channel

We use television monitors to show "The Smile Channel," a series of informational videos designed to make dentistry easy to understand. "The Smile Channel" features segments on sedation dentistry, dental bonding, dentures, and more.
